Scratch the surface, and the idea of America as a bastion of freedom and land of opportunity for those who have what it takes to “make it” on their own can starkly contrast with the reality.

As far back as Lara B. Smith recalls, she always has had a deep awareness not just of her inner essence, but also those of other people, as well.
